Sanitary towels are the most common menstrual care product for most Kenyan women. Most women were first introduced to a sanitary towel before they could try out other options, like tampons or menstrual cups, just to mention a few. Therefore, it goes without saying that women expect the sanitary towels they use to be safe and harmless to their bodies, but sadly, this has not been the case.
In 2019, #MyAlwaysExperience was trending on X, where several women came out to express their dissatisfaction with the product. They alleged that the product that was sold in the African market was substandard when compared to Western markets and this is something I can agree with. I have used sanitary towels from the US and Europe and there is a significant difference in the quality of the products.
The US offers a variety of sanitary towels in terms of size and the quality felt a lot different because they would absorb pretty well and stay in place. Not to mention how the ones in Kenya would not glue around the undies properly. The ones in Europe were more comfortable, with no leaks and no irritation. They also have a variety of sizes, but they are not as large as the ones in the US. I had a very irregular and heavy period while in the US and this was my go-to choice from their range. It did feel like a diaper, but it was super absorbent and had zero leaks, sadly, it is not available in Kenya.
My experience with that brand’s pads has been a love-hate kind because the other brands were just not working for me and for years, I loathed having my period. For starters, that 8-hour protection sales pitch is a lie, I would wake up two to three times a night because the pad had leaked because of poor absorption. Another issue that I would experience was irritation, I hated that I could feel the wetness from my period because this thing would barely absorb as well as it had been advertised.
Over the years, I had been actively looking for alternatives that did not have a controversy behind them and were genuinely designed to make women feel thought of in the manufacturing process, not just a dollar sign. A majority of the products that are in the market contain both Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and phthalates which potentially pose risks when absorbed through the skin. Explains why most women were complaining of issues like rashes, itching, boils, and burns.
As I mentioned, my relationship with that brand’s pads has been a love-hate kind and I desperately needed to get out of it. So, one day while shopping at Carrefour at the Junction Mall, I came across this sweet sales lady who was promoting a Japanese technology sanitary towel that was relatively new to the market. I am not one to be convinced to try new stuff because I am a creature of habit and structure, but I was just about done with that brand’s pads. I risked and bought the sanitary towels and that was the end of my relationship with that brand.
So, in today’s feature of Businesses We Love, allow me to introduce you to Sofy Ultra Sanitary Pad.
This product has been life-changing and this is NOT A SPONSORED POST, I just want to plug someone who needs something different. Something that will make you feel cared for and thought of. The fact that I no longer have to wake up at night to check if my sheets are still white or rush to the bathroom because I had a leak and I do not want it to transfer to my sheets or pajamas has been the reason why this brand has been a win for me.
It is a comfortable sanitary towel, with deep absorption that keeps you dry 24/7, and guess what, it stays in place no matter how you sleep. I have found peace in this gem here and I would give it a 10/10. In addition to this, I no longer have any irritation or itchiness which makes my days a little bit better than they did with the other brand I divorced. The texture of this product just goes to show you how much thought and love is put into developing it, I have worked out using it and zero leaks. They are also super thin, so it doesn’t feel like you have a loaf of bread sitting between your legs, and most importantly, they are a Japanese innovation, I mean look at the roads built by the Japanese and compare them to those done by…never mind, but you get where I am heading with this?
Another thing I love about this product is that it is affordable and given the value it provides, I use the 14-pack one for my entire period. With the other brand, I would go through two of the double packs!
